The Mazak Vortex 1400/160-II is a 5-axis CNC vertical machining center. It comes equipped with an oil mist lubricated and stator driven spindle capable of running up to 18,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Mazak Vortex 1400/160-II spindle was partially seized when it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics. After a full breakdown and evaluation, we noted that the front of the spindle interior was heavily contaminated with particulate. The #1 front bearing had failed and welded itself to the front bearing spacers. We also noted that the HSK-100 tooling taper and face had high runout with poor tool contact. The 90mm (oversized) front bearing journal had high deviation (+34µ/+42µ) and the front bearing shoulder had 5µ runout. Lastly, the drawbar will need new belleville washers that must be supplied by the customer from the OEM. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mazak Vortex 1400/160-II spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the HSK-100 tooling taper
GPG the 90mm front journal
Kiss grind the HSK face
Kiss grind the front bearing shoulder
Schenk balance the bare shaft
Rebuild the drawbar
Replace the OEM bearing and spacer set, oil lines/ferrules/spiral wrap, seals, o-rings, and assembly screws

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
