The Mitsubishi M-V5CN is a CNC vertical machining center. It comes standard with a grease lubricated and stator driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
When this Mitsubishi M-V5CN spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics we found that the front quad set of ceramic bearings felt rough when rotated by hand. It could be due to a crash causing a sudden excessive radial load. The shaft tooling taper was worn with poor tool contact and the shaft tail ID was severely scored. The end of the shaft OD was oversized >70µ from the rest of the journal with 8-14µ runout. Lastly, the hydraulic rotor journal had pre-existing light scoring. No other dimensional deviations were noted.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Mitsubishi M-V5CN spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Polish out scoring on rotor journal
- Kiss grind shaft tooling taper
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind rear shaft journal OD and ID
- Replace bearings (this quote includes high speed tail bearing), o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
