The Mitsubishi MCV-1000A is a CNC vertical machining center. It comes fitted with this grease lubricated and belt driven spindle that is capable of running up to 8,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Mitsubishi MCV-1000A spindle was partially seized up when it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics. We were able to break it free but it remained very hard to turn by hand, therefore we were unable to measure incoming run outs. Some tail end parts on the spindle were loose incoming and there appeared to be a bolt-on cap missing as well. After a full breakdown and evaluation, we noted that there was coolant oil present in the housing bore. The coolant contaminated all 4 bearings and the #2 bearing suffered a catastrophic failure sending debris into the remaining bearings. Lastly, the drawbar pulled very good force incoming, but the gripper fingers were heavily worn. No dimensional deviations were noted for this spindle repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Mitsubishi MCV-1000A spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bolts, o-rings, bellevilles, gripper assembly, and bearings
- Request that customer provide the Bolt-on cap for the shaft tail end
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
