This Mitsubishi VR30/36C spindle is an attachment on a very large bridge mill style machine. It is grease lubricated and direct drive, making it capable of running up to 3,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Mitsubishi VR30/36C spindle rotated freely when spun by hand, but the bearings felt slightly worn. During incoming testing we noted that the spindle failed pressure testing, which revealed a leak around the rear cover of the spindle. While disassembling the spindle for evaluation, it was noted that the front nut had backed off and unloaded the bearings. After completing the disassembly and evaluation, we found a couple unacceptable deviations on some critical dimensions. First, the rear tapered roller journal and front ID tooling taper had high run outs of 8µ and 10µ. Lastly, the shaft nose had rubbed against the front cover and caused some damage. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Mitsubishi VR30/36C spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bolts, bearings, bellevilles, gripper balls, and o-rings
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the ID 50 Taper
- GPG the rear tapered roller journal
- Machine rub out damage to front cover and nose of the shaft
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
