The Okamoto ACC 32-80EX is a larger CNC surface grinder. This specific spindle is a coupling driven, grease-lubricated spindle that can run up to 1,100 RPM.
CHALLENGE
Customer sent in this spindle stating that it was noisy. Upon arriving to Northland Tool and Electronics it was hard to spin by hand and had a little bit of noise. After disassembling the spindle it was found that there was coolant/water on the shaft and in the housing. The bearings had corrosion built up on the balls and the grease had degraded from the coolant/water contamination. All four bearings felt scratchy when turned by hand and were the main reason for this repair. There were no significant dimensional deviations on any critical surfaces (bearing journals, bearing shoulders, housing, etc.)
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Okamoto ACC 32-80EX spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts and o-rings
- Replace bearings
- Re-apply Gasket Maker to rear cover
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
