This Okamoto OH-60M spindle is oil mist lubricated and pulley driven. It is capable of very high speed grinding, running up to an amazing 60,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Okamoto OH-60M spindle was difficult to rotate by hand incoming. Upon disassembly, we noted that the front shaft nut was loose and the spindle had massive endplay. The rear #4 bearing suffered a catastrophic failure, possibly from the loss of preload. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a few issues. First, the tooling pilot face had uneven runout and the pilot ID was undersized .001”. The supplied quill was hard to thread in as well. We also noted that the drive pulley taper had 6µ runout and the drive pulley was damaged. Lastly, the rear bearing journal shoulder had slightly high runout and the 35mm front housing bore was oversized +12/+15µ (ISO is ±5.5µ).
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Okamoto OH-60M spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the 35mm front housing bore
- Kiss grind the tooling pilot ID and face
- Kiss grind the drive pulley taper and rear bearing journal shoulder
- Upgrade to ceramic bearings
- Replace drive pulley, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
