Okamoto ACC-820DX Spindle Repair
The Okamoto ACC-820DX is an automatic surface grinder. It comes fitted with a grease lubricated spindle that is capable of running up to 3,600 rpm.
This Okamoto ACC-820DX spindle was noisy when spun by hand incoming and had an extreme amount of rust and corrosion present on the nose of the spindle. The front OD Taper threads had corroded away and were extremely loose with the provided nut. The last note we took before breaking down the spindle was that the customer supplied tool had a crack through the threads that lock the wheel in place. After disassembly, we noted that the front bearings were heavily contaminated with a thick particulate. The rear bearings were contaminated as well but not as heavily as the front. The critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) were then measured. First, the front OD taper had high runout bare shaft (8µ). Lastly, the front housing showed signs of fretting and was out of ISO. (ISO is ±7.5µ, housing was +18/+20µ). There were no other dimensional deviations noted for this repair.
The following actions were performed on this Okamoto ACC-820DX spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, bolts, and o-rings
- Weld and repair damaged threads on front OD Taper
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the front housing
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
