Rear bearing failure from high belt tension. As the customer increased their feed rates the load to the spindle increased. Coolant splashing on the belt and pulley surface and a worn belt caused the belt to slip. The quick fix was to tighten the belt. This solved the slip problem but eventually caused the rear bearings to fail. A new belt is always cheaper than a spindle repair.
CHALLENGE
On top of the excessive belt tension causing this Okamoto OH-30G spindle to fail, after disassembling and evaluating it we noted that the grease was washed from the bearings. The bearings removed were not rated for 30,000 rpm and there were missing spacers. Lastly, the taper had 10 microns of runout and the shaft journal was under sized and out of ISO. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Okamoto OH-30G spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
- Manufacture new spacers
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the shaft journal and pilot
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
