Okamoto PSG-125 Spindle Repair

The Okamoto PSG-125 spindle is a cartridge style grinding spindle. It is grease lubricated, coupling driven, and capable of running up to 1,100 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Okamoto PSG-125 spindle was seized incoming and no tests could be performed. After a full breakdown and evaluation, we noted that the #3 bearing had separated and all bearings had rust contamination in them. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found that the front OD Taper had 10 microns of run out. It was also noted that both the front and rear shoulders had 6 microns of run out as well. There were no other dimensional deviations noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Okamoto PSG-125 spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings, seals, o-rings, and assembly screws
Kiss grind the front OD taper
Kiss grind the front and rear bearing shoulders

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
