The Renaud spindle, model 175-170200-DIA25, is grease lubricated and can run up to 11,640 RPM. It is a motorized spindle used in grinding applications and has a manual tool clamping system.
CHALLENGE
The customer that sent in this spindle had stated that the bearings were bad and sent it in for evaluation. When the spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics it spun freely when turned by hand, but the bearings sounded scratchy. Upon disassembly, we found that the front and rear bearings had been contaminated with a brown particulate. This was determined to be the main cause of failure in this spindle. The field in the spindle motor tested good and there were no dimensional deviations found on any critical surfaces (bearing journals, bearing shoulders, or taper).
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Renaud 175-170200-DIA25 spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts and o-rings
- Replace steel bearings
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
