Shoda Maxxim Spindle Repair

Shoda Maxxim Spindle Repair

The Shoda Maxxim spindle is off of a multi spindle CNC wood routing machine.  This spindle is grease lubricated and stator driven making it capable of running up to 15,000 RPM.

CHALLENGE

Our customer sent in this Shoda Maxxim spindle stating that it had failed.  When it arrived at Northland Tool we noted that it was difficult to spin by hand.  We then performed a full breakdown and evaluation and recorded that the rear bearing had catastrophically failed.

Catastrophic bearing failure

We then completed a dimensional evaluation of the spindle and found a few issues.  First, the front ID pilot had high run out and poor deviation.  Second, the rear bearing journal and both bearing shoulders had high run out. Lastly, the stator passed all incoming tests and will not need any repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Shoda Maxxim spindle:

  • Clean, inspect overall dimensions
  • Replace bearings, bolts, and o-rings
  • Grind, plate, grind (GPG) the ID pilot and rear bearing journal
  • Kiss grind front and rear bearing shoulders and pilot face

RESULT

After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload, we put the spindle through a rigorous break-in and testing procedure to make sure it passes our final quality inspection. See below for the passing test reports:
