SKF 65 Spindle Repair

This SKF 65 spindle is grease lubricated, belt driven, and capable of running up to 10,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This SKF 65 spindle was sent in for a full breakdown and evaluation of the spindle. Upon inspection, we noted that the front bearing quad set failed from coolant contamination as it was full of coolant sludge. The front shaft journal was very fretted and undersized where the #1 bearing sits (-18/-19)(ISO is +/-4). The taper was worn and had a 20 micron hole and the front housing was oversized +8/+18 tapered (ISO is +/-7). Lastly, the rear roller was a double row of rollers with one row or rollers taken out.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this SKF 65 spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings,o-rings,bellvilles,gripper balls
Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the taper
GPG the front journal
GPG the front housing

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
