Tsugami FMA5-II Spindle Repair
The Tsugami FMA5-II is a large CNC horizontal machining center with a built in pallet changer. It comes fitted with an oil mist lubricated and stator driven spindle capable of running up to 10,000 rpm.
This Tsugami FMA5-II spindle was sent to us for a full breakdown and evaluation. Upon closer inspection, we noted that the taper had high runout incoming, and the runout remained when measured bare shaft. The taper also had some visible damage and discoloring. We also noted that the #1 bearing felt a little rough when spun by hand. Lastly, the rear roller journal was undersized for a straight bore style roller that was installed. Our customer requested the oil ports be tapped with 10-32 thread quick connects.
The following actions were performed on this Tsugami FMA5-II spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, bolts and o-rings
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the 40 ID Taper
- GPG 55mm Roller journal
- Drill and tap Oil ports for 10-32 thread quick connects (Customer suppied the connectors)
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
