The Bridgeport HMC 700HP is a large CNC horizontal machining center. It can come equipped with this grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Bridgeport HMC 700HP spindle was nearly seized when it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics. After completing the breakdown of the spindle, we noted that there was a catastrophic failure of the rear roller bearing. The cage and rolling elements were completely destroyed. We then evaluated all critical dimensions and found a few unacceptable deviations. First, the tooling taper ID had poor tool contact with high runout. Second, the front bearing journal shoulder had high runout. Third, the 110mm front housing bore was out of round +7/+15µm (ISO = ±7.5µm). Lastly, the gripper fingers (collet) had severe damage on critical tool retention surfaces and several bellevilles were broken. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Bridgeport HMC 700HP spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the tooling taper ID
- Kiss grind the front journal shoulder
- GPG the 110mm front housing bore
- Replace all bearings, bellevilles, grippers, seals, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
