Our customer pulled this spindle when the rear of the spindle started to make noise. It appears that the rotary union started to leak and the coolant found its way into the rear roller bearing.
CHALLENGE
This Bridgeport / SKF VMC 1000 spindle suffered a catastrophic rear roller bearing failure. The #1 front bearing was also noted as being worn. The rear of spindle (drive pulley and rear cover) was coated in coolant residue which may be from a leaky rotary union. Taper had good run out, but is showing signs of wear (pock marks) and is not at Big-Plus specifications. Lastly, the gripper fingers were starting to show wear including stepping at point of contact. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Bridgeport / SKF VMC 1000 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, o-rings, seals, bellevilles, and grippers
- Kiss grind the taper
- Customer should replace the rotary union
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
