Doosan DMV3016 Spindle Repair

The Daewoo DMV-3016 is a CNC vertical machining center made for high production machining. It is equipped with a stator driven and oil mist lubricated spindle capable of running up to 8,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

The bearings in this Doosan DMV3016 spindle were very noisy when it arrived at our shop for evaluation & quoting. Upon disassembly it was found that the spindle interior was thoroughly contaminated with coolant sludge which caused the failure of the front quad bearing set. In addition, we found that the 100mm housing bore, which appeared to have been previously plated & ground, was worn oversized and out of tolerance in both the front & rear. The shaft taper was also worn with slightly more runout than we would find acceptable, and there was some damage at the rear of the shaft where an adjusting spacer is located. Several push-connect oil line fittings were snapped off, and the ID of the drive pulley was severely fretted and had several damaged teeth as well. The gripper (collet) components had light wear but were perfectly usable.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Doosan DMV3016 spindle:

Clean all parts of the spindle
Replace all bolts, o-rings, and bellevilles
Replace drive pulley
Replace oil fittings
Replace bearings
Kiss grind the shaft wear and damage
Grind/Plate/Grind the 100mm housing bores

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
