Enshu JE80S Spindle Repair
The Enshu JE80S is a large CNC horizontal machining center. It comes standard with an oil mist lubricated and stator driven spindle capable of running up to 15,000 rpm.
When this Enshu JE80S spindle arrive at our facility the bearings felt rough when spun by hand and the assembled runout was marginal (4µ). Upon inspection, we noted that the drive keys and grippers were worn and needed to be replaced. The spindle also failed coolant pressure testing. Further into the inspection, we noted that the mid inner spacer on front bearing set got very heated. It made contact with the outer spacer and cracked in three pieces. Both inner and outer spacers need to be replaced. The bare shaft had a bend in it that was most likely from the heated inner spacer. Lastly, the front bearing set was contaminated from the center spacer damage. Once we pulled the winding sleeve out it was apparent that the o-rings were worn causing the coolant leak.
The following actions were performed on this Okuma MC-V4020 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace all bearings, grippers, o-rings, assembly bolts, drive keys, and center spacer set
- Straighten the shaft
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the rear tapered roller journal
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
