Matsuura ES-450H Spindle Repair
The Matsuura ES-450H is a CNC horizontal machining center. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and coupling driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.
We receive spindles from Canada on a monthly basis. One of our longtime customers has been using us for years on their Matsuura spindles. The customer notified us that this Matsuura ES-450H spindle was coming in and needed some work. When we received the spindle it could not be run up as the spindle was seized. Once the spindle was disassembled, we found the rear roller outer race was cracked and the cage was destroyed. The rear roller was destroyed as it was not rated for the 12,000 rpm that the customer runs the spindle. The taper was in rough shape, the rear housing shoulder was not at ISO specification, the grippers were worn, and the drawbar pin and hex were damaged.
The following actions were performed on this Matsuura ES-450H spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts, o-rings, and bellevilles
- Replace gripper fingers
- Replace bearings and drawbar shaft
- Kiss grind the rear housing shoulder
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the tooling taper
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
DETAILED CAUSE OF FAILURE
This is the spindle totally broken down and set up for cause of failure evaluation. It is at this point in the repair process we determine why the spindle failed and what needs to be fixed to bring it back to OEM specifications.
This is the outer race of the rear roller bearing still mounted in the housing. Notice the cage has split in two and disintegrated. This was the ultimate cause of this spindles failure. Northland Tool replaces this roller bearing with a roller designed specifically for the high speeds this spindle achieves.
This is the rear roller bearing inner race and rollers still mounted on the shaft. When the roller cage disintegrates the rolling elements are no longer separated causing them to stack up upon each other and seize the spindle shaft.
