Haas VF-2D Spindle Repair

The Haas VF-2D is a 3-axis CNC vertical machining center.  It can come fitted with this grease lubricated and pulley driven spindle capable of running up to 7,500 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Haas VF-2D spindle was seized when it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics.  After a complete disassembly and evaluation, we found that the #4 rear radial bearing had catastrophically failed and was the reason for the seized shaft.  The #4 bearing had also welded itself to the inner spacer, therefore the spacer will need to be cleaned in machining before assembly.  When we inspected the drawbar assembly and taper, it was noted that the front ID Taper had poor contact with bad run out and many of the bellevilles on the drawbar were broken.  Lastly, the rear bearing shoulder had high run out and will need a kiss grind.  No other dimensional deviations were noted for the repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Haas VF-2D spindle:

• Clean, inspect overall dimensions
• Replace bolts, bearings, o-rings, bellevilles, and gripper balls
• Kiss Grind the ID Taper
• Kiss Grind the rear shoulder
• Clean up the inner rear spacer in machining

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
