Hardinge Conquest-SG-2 Spindle Repair
The Hardinge Conquest SG-2 comes equipped with a grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 6,000 rpm.
A long time MTR (machine tool rebuilder) had his own spindle in need of rebuild. He sent the spindle in and we found that the bearings failed from coolant contamination. We also found the OD of front shaft shoulder behind the face flange was drilled full of excessively deep balancing holes. The shaft ID taper, OD taper and face all had dents and rub out damage.
The following actions were performed on this Hardinge Conquest-SG-2 spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts and o-rings
- Replace all bearings, front cover gasket, drive button, and retention screw
- Machine off the front shaft shoulder, install a new shrink fit ring and kiss grind to re-establish a new front shoulder
- Kiss grind the shaft ID taper, OD taper, and face
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to the MTR with a 1-year warranty.
DETAILED CAUSE OF FAILURE
Contamination of the bearing has turned the grease black and compromised the lubricating ability
Contamination shown inside the housing. It migrated from the front to the rear of the spindle
A previous rebuilder had difficulty balancing this shaft. They had removed so much material it was deemed the shaft integrity was compromised and needed repair
