Hardinge Spindle Repair
A returning customer called us about this Hardinge 10,000 rpm spindle. After two years of running the spindle, it started to make a high pitched noise. The customer’s machine tool repairman went in and told them it was belt noise. The customer adjusted belts and the spindle was quiet again. A month later, they called in and the spindle was no longer running and the spindle was coming in for evaluation.
CHALLENGE
We received the spindle and found that the spindle was seized. (When we receive spindles in that do spin we will test run it for an extensive evaluation.) The customer was made aware that the spindle was seized and that we needed to break it down. The breakdown evaluation showed that the spindle had catastrophic rear roller failure. The rear of the spindle was coated with a sticky coolant residue and the rear bearing had failed from the contamination. A detailed report was sent to the customer and it indicated that the customer should check their rotary union.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Hardinge spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
