CHALLENGE
Our customer sent us this Makino FNC60 spindle stating it was noisy. We noticed right away that there was a low growl when spun by hand incoming. After completing the breakdown and evaluation of the spindle, we noted that there was heavy coolant contamination in the #1 and #2 bearings. The rear roller bearing showed signs of coolant conatamination as well. There were no dimensional deviations to note for this repair. The customer requested that we set the tool gap on this spindle to be the same as his other two machines for tool changes. This required a grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) to allow the taper to be brought forward.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Makino FNC60 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions

RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
