Mazak VCN 510C-II Spindle Repair

The Mazak VCN 510C-II is a CNC vertical machining center designed for machining with 5-axis for very complex parts.  It comes fitted with this oil mist lubricated and coupling driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Mazak VCN 510C-II spindle was seized incoming to Northland Tool and Electronics as well as covered in rust and contaminant.  We also noted that the coupling bolts were partially removed and one was broken off in the hydraulic nut.  The front cover was not sent in with the spindle and this will be required to rebuild the spindle properly.  During disassembly our technician noted that the coupling ID was rusted and extremely difficult to remove.  Once the spindle was fully disassembled and evaluated, we noted that the front bearings were severely contaminated, causing failure and seizure of the shaft.  The drawbar was extremely rusted and difficult to disassemble.  Lastly, the grippers were worn and the internal plunger in the gripper knob was missing its seal and was very worn.  There were no other dimensional deviations of note for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mazak VCN 510C-II spindle:

• Replace bearings, bolts, o-rings, belleviles, and gripper assembly
• Machine out and repair threads on rear of the hydraulic nut
• Customer will need to supply front cover for rebuild and testing

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
