The Milltronics BR60 is a bridge mill style CNC machining center. Milltronics sometimes uses Cells spindles in their machines as seen on this model. This Cells spindle is grease lubricated, coupling driven, and capable of running up to 10,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Milltronics BR60 Cells spindle had bearings that were slightly noisy when rotated by hand in assembly incoming. After disassembly and a close evaluation, we found that the bearings contained excessive grease and the rear pair has some contamination. The actuator functioned properly but the spindle would not accept a tool as the grippers were partially backed off. Actuator and gripper fingers (collet) were in good condition, we will be used as is. The screws that attach the splash ring to the front shaft spacer were broken and severely bent. Lastly, the tooling taper ID was worn with 8µm runout (bare shaft) and the 50mm rear coupling journal was bent with >36µm runout. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Milltronics BR60 Cells spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the tooling taper ID
- GPG the 50mm rear coupling journal
- Replace all ceramic bearings, bellevilles, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
