The Mori Seiki SH630 is a twin turret CNC horizontal machining center. It can come fitted with an oil mist lubricated and coupling driven spindle that is capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Mori Seiki SH630 spindle’s bearings felt rough when rotated by hand in assembly incoming. Upon disassebling and inspecting the spindle, we noted that the spindle housing contained a particulate contaminant and the #1 front bearing was full of it. The 100mm front bearing journal had light fretting, but dimension and runout were within ISO tolerance. Drive splines on the rear of shaft had some wear but were functional as well. Lastly, the gripper fingers had significant wear on critical holding surfaces and the front cover ID had light rubout damage. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Mori Seiki SH630 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Rework rubout damage to front cover ID
- Replace ceramic bearings, gripper fingers, gripper balls, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
