Mori Seiki NH5000 Spindle Repair

The Mori Seiki NH5000 is a large CNC horizontal machining center. It comes fitted with an oil mist lubricated and stator driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Mori Seiki NH5000 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics for a complete breakdown and evaluation. Upon assessment, we noted that the #1 and #2 bearings had failed and the #2 bearing had spun on the shaft and in the housing. It was also noted that the shield for the oil line was snapped off. Coolant plungers and the drive dogs need to be replaced. Lastly, the inner spacer was destroyed by the bearing so we will have to remake a new one.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mori Seiki NH5000 spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings, shield for oil lines, splash ring, plunger assembly, drive dogs, ferrules, and brass tubing
Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the shaft journal and taper
Balance the shaft after GPG
GPG the housing
Manufacture a new inner bearing spacer

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

DETAILED CAUSE OF FAILURE

Front bearing failure. These are the inner races of the front bearings with a spacer in the middle. These were welded to the shaft.
