CHALLENGE
Pope P924GA, 3600 RPM, grease lubrication, stator driven
Our customer, a leading manufacturer of industrial cutting tools, has a large population of grinding machines with these motorized spindles. As part of our support of their spindles, we make sure that the power cabling exits the spindle housing in a uniform location. In this case, the cabling was already oriented properly.
This rebuild was fairly typical for grinding spindles which are used to manufacture cutting tools. The bearings felt very rough when rotated in assembly incoming. Upon disassembly, we noted that the grease in the front roller bearing was thoroughly contaminated with cutting oil & grinding swarf. The only dimensional deviation we noted was high runout on the wheel hub OD taper.
SOLUTION
We completed a kiss grind of the wheel hub OD taper, and rebuilt the spindle with all new bearings, double lip seal and assembly screws. We finished this rebuild with our final test run, break-in, trim balance and final QC.
