This Supermax G-40 came equipped with this grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 7,160 RPM.
CHALLENGE
Our customer sent in this Supermax G-40 spindle stating that the spindle was crashed and had failed. After completing the breakdown we recorded that the grease in the rear bearings was partially washed out and there was fretting between the rear bearings and the rear journal.
We then performed a critical dimension evaluation, and noted that the rear OD taper had high run out at 10μ. We also found that the front housing was egged and the rear housing was too tight of a fit and egged as well. Lastly, the pulley was heavily damaged and a deep groove had been worn into it through to the key.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Supermax G-40 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
- Replace bearings, bolts, o-rings, and key
- Grind, plate, grind (GPG) the rear OD taper
- GPG the front and rear bearing housings
- GPG the rear bearing journal
- Manufacture replacement pulley
RESULT
After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload, we put the spindle through a rigorous break-in and testing procedure to make sure it passes our final quality inspection.
This spindle passed our final quality inspection and was returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

It’s a fact of machining — eventually, even top-of-the-line turning machines will experience a spindle failure. Spindles endure tension, torsion, heavy loads, and speeds up to and beyond 150,000 RPM, to name a few of the standard stressors.
