Toshiba BMC 630 Spindle Repair

The Toshiba BMC 630 is a bridge mill type vertical machining center. It comes equipped with an oil mist lubricated and gear driven spindle capable of running up to 5,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Toshiba BMC 630 spindle had failed from insufficient lubrication of the bearings. When we informed our customer of this, we advised them to thoroughly inspect the operation of their lubricator. We also noted several dimensional issues: high runout and poor tool contact in the taper, worn drive dogs and grippers, 150mm front housing bore was out of round where the roller and pair of angular contact bearings are located, and scoring of the drawbar shaft from the action of the belleville springs. Lastly, there was a severe bend and wear at the rear of the shaft where the rotary union attaches.

SOLUTION

We performed a precision grind, chrome plate, and finish grind of the 150mm front housing bore, as well as a kiss grind of the tooling taper. We also reworked the drive dogs to repair the existing damage. When all components had been thoroughly cleaned, we reassembled the spindle with new bearings, bellevilles, grippers, oil lines, ferrules, o-rings, and assembly screws.

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
