Brown & Sharpe #5 Spindle Repair
The Brown & Sharpe #5 is a manual grinding machine. This spindle is grease lubricated and belt driven, making it capable of running up to 1,875 rpm.
This Brown & Sharp #5 spindle was very noisy when spun by hand incoming. During disassembly, the front nut was rusted to the shaft and extremely difficult to remove. Upon inspection of the spindle, we noted that the front cover was heavily rusted and corroded and should be remade. The bearings were contaminated with particulate and the grease had begun to wash out and turn into a black sludge. Lastly, the spanner holes were damaged from removal and will need to be welded and redrilled. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
The following actions were performed on this Brown & Sharpe #5 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
- Manufacture a new front cover
- Weld and redrill front shaft nut spanner holes
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
