Brown & Sharpe 814U Spindle Repair
The Brown & Sharpe 814U is a manual OD grinding machine. It comes fitted with a grease lubricated and pulley driven spindle capable of running up to 540 rpm.
When this Brown & Sharpe 814U spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics we completed a full breakdown and evaluation. First thing we noted during disassembly was that the spindle shaft stop locking pin was worn and was not allowing the main shaft to turn freely. The main shaft locking pin stop holes were damaged as well. The front and rear seals were worn out and there was light wear on the shaft where they locate. Lastly, the shaft taper was galled and had 7-9µ runout.
The following actions were performed on this Brown & Sharpe 814U spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Repair locking pin assembly and main shaft locking pin stop holes
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the shaft taper
- Replace bearings, seals, drive belt, and assembly screws
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
