This Fischer Precise SC80 spindle is an ID grinding spindle out of a universal cylindrical grinder. This spindle is oil mist lubricated and stator driven capable of running up to 40,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
Our customer uses many CNC machining and turning centers to produce precision small arms components for military and commercial firearms manufacturers. They also employ a large complement of centerless, surface, cylindrical and CNC tool and cutter grinders. The bearings in this ID grinding spindle from a universal cylindrical grinding machine were very difficult to rotate in assembly incoming. Upon disassembly we observed that the rear pair of bearings had suffered catastrophic failure during which the cages containing the rolling elements had been destroyed. Our tests of the integral motor did not indicate any electrical issues and no dimensional deviations were observed on the shaft or housing.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Fischer Precise SC80 spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts and o-rings
- Replace bearings
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
