This high speed spindle had a worn ball cage housing. This must be properly measured and held to particular tolerances as it determines the preload of the bearings. As the shaft heats from normal usage it thermally expands, the ball cage lets it “grow” towards the rear of the spindle allowing consistent bearing preload and the ability to hold part tolerances. If the ball cage is not functioning properly it can cause high bearing preload, looseness in the spindle assembly and premature spindle failure.
CHALLENGE
This Heald Red Head 126173 spindle arrived in really rough shape. The shaft pilot had damage and a broken off quill in the pilot. All of the bearings sounded rough when spun by hand. The rear housing OD ball cage slide had -16/-18 slide. We also noted that the front shaft nut needed to be replaced due to excessive damage. Lastly, the rear shaft screw was worn and needed to be replaced. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Heald Red Head 126173 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
- Manufacture a new shaft
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the housing od for proper ball cage fit
- Manufacture a new front shaft nut
- Manufacture a new rear shaft screw
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
