The Komo VR512 is a very large CNC wood router. It can come equipped with a grease lubricated and stator driven spindle capable of running up to 24,000 RPM.
CHALLENGE
This Komo VR512 spindle was seized when it arrived at Northland Tool. During disassembly, we noted that the actuator and drawbar had made contact while the spindle was spinning and welded themselves to one another as seen here.
After completing the disassembly and evaluation we recorded that all of the bearings were contaminated with a brown particulate and had very little grease in them. The HSK 40 ID tooling taper had high run out and poor contact.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Komo Mach One 508 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, bolts, o-rings, seals, and bellevilles
- Grind, plate, grind (GPG) the HSK 40 taper
- Repair damaged actuator and drawbar parts
RESULT
After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload, we put the spindle through a rigorous break-in and testing procedure. This spindle passed our final quality inspection and was returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
