The Makino S-56 is a medium sized production vertical machining center. It comes fitted with a grease lubricated and stator driven spindle that is capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Makino S-56 spindle was sent in to Northland Tool and Electronics for a full breakdown and evaluation. Upon closer inspection, we noted that the front bearings had failed from contamination and the rear bearing had spun in the rear housing causing extensive wear. The encoder sensor had rub out marks on it and the front cover was damaged as well. We then completed an inspection of the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a couple deviations. First, the front and rear housings were out of ISO. The front housing was +11/+13 (ISO is +/-7.5) and the rear housing was 0/+200 (ISO is +/-13). Lastly, the taper had 12 microns of runout and will need to be ground.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Makino S-56 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, encoder sensor, and GMN seal
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the front and rear housings
- Kiss grind the shaft taper
- Machine the front cover
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
