Mori Seiki SV-500 Spindle Repair

The Mori Seiki SV-500 is a CNC vertical machining center.  It comes fitted with an oil mist lubricated and stator driven spindle capable of running up to 10,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Mori Seiki SV-500 spindle was sent in to us for a full breakdown and evaluation.  After inspecting the spindle we noted that the shaft tooling taper was worn and had been previously sleeved and pinned. Both integral drive dogs had heavy damage which will need to be repaired.  There was some evidence of coolant contamination in spindle, the coolant ports were full of sludge and debris.  Lastly, the coolant nozzle blocks were contaminated and have corroded, worn, and broken springs and balls.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mori Seiki SV-500 spindle:

• Clean, inspect overall dimensions
• Kiss grind shaft tooling taper
• Mill off drive dogs, drill and tap new location for removable drive dogs, and manufacture new drive dogs
• Replace bearings, push-connect fittings, balls, springs, o-rings, and assembly screws.

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
