The Okuma HF503 is a high speed cartridge grinding spindle. It is oil mist lubricated, stator driven, and capable of running up to 45,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Okuma HF503 spindle had a low growl that was heard when the spindle was spun by hand incoming. After disassembly and evaluation, we noted that there was grinding swarf found in the front covers and the front bearing. There was slight fretting on the front shaft journal and the shaft had been chromed previously. Both the front and rear bearings felt rough when spun by hand. Lastly, the front ID Pilot and face both had high runouts incoming. No other significant dimensional deviations to note.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Okuma HF503 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, bolts, o-rings and gaskets
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the front ID pilot and face
- Repaint the housing
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
