The Mori Seiki NH5000 is a CNC horizontal machining center. This specific spindle is oil mist lubricated, stator driven, and capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
Our customer sent in this Mori Seiki NH5000 spindle indicating that the spindle was making excessive noise during operation. The bearings felt very rough when rotated by hand in assembly incoming. After disassembly and evaluation, we noted that the front bearing quad set was contaminated with a rusty brown sludge. The encoder target wheel had multiple damaged teeth and no coolant plungers were installed. The gripper fingers (collet) had significant damage on critical tool retention surfaces. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found that the tooling taper ID was pock-marked with damage to the chamfer, poor tool contact, and high runout. It was also noted that the 100mm front housing bore was tapered +2/-7µm. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Mori Seiki NH5000 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the tooling taper ID
- Kiss grind the 100mm front housing bore
- Replace bearings, target wheel, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
