The Hardinge Cobra 51 is a CNC turning center. It can come equipped with this grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 4,500RPM.
CHALLENGE
Our customer sent in this Hardinge Cobra 51 spindle for repair. Once the spindle arrived at Northland Tool we completed a full disassembly and evaluation.
This is what we found:
- Spindle arrived spinning but sounded bad and felt worn/very dirty
- Rear pulley nut was difficult to remove and sustained damage to the spanner holes
- Front bearings fretted against the housing and that material contaminated the bearings
- ID collet taper had high run out and was visibly worn
- Lathe taper and face both had high run out
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Hardinge Cobra 51 spindle:
- Replace bolts, cork gasket, and bearings
- Weld damaged spanner holes on pulley nut
- Skim face and OD of nut in machining and drill new spanner holes
- Grind-Plate-Grind (GPG) ID collet taper due to high run out and wear
- GPG Lathe taper and kiss grind face due to high run out
RESULT
After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
