The Hardinge Contquest T42 is an older CNC turning center. It come equipped with a grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 6,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
When this Hardinge Conquest T42 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics it was completely seized. Upon disassembly we noted the grease in the front bearing triset was dried out and the bearings were severely rusted. The rear bearing pair was contaminated with a fine black particulate. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a few unacceptable deviations. First, the shaft OD taper had rubout damage. Second, the taper face appeared to have been scribed or heavily rubbed. Lastly, the shaft ID taper had high runout of 14µm. No other significant dimensional deviations were noted.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Hardinge Conquest T42 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Kiss grind the shaft taper and face
- Kiss grind the front flange face
- Replace bearings, front gasket, tapered spacer pin, set screws, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
