CHALLENGE
Our customer sent in this Hardinge GTA 1353-B spindle after it had suffered a hard crash. When it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics the first thing we noted was some heavy rub out damage from the crash. We then completed a full evaluation of the spindle and noted a few issues. First, the ID shaft collet taper had 10-12 microns of runout and the OD was very rough. Second, the timing pulley teeth were very worn. Third, we noted that the front cover face had some wear that needed to be addressed. Lastly, the chuck alignment button retention screw was missing. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this spindle.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Hardinge GTA 1353-B spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Machine front cover
- Kiss grind ID, face and OD taper
- Replace bearings, front cover gasket, timing pulley, alignment button retention screw
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
