The Hardinge GX510 is a compact CNC vertical machining center. It comes fitted with a grease lubricated and pulley driven spindle capable of running up to 10,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Hardinge GX510 spindle was noisy and rough when spun by hand incoming. Upon disassembly and inspection, we noted that the rear roller had catastrophically failed and the front bearings were heavily over greased. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a couple issues. One issue was that the rear bearing shoulder had 8µ run out. The second issue we found we that the the ID taper had high run out and was in poor condition. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Hardinge GX510 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bolts, o-rings, bearings
- Kiss grind the rear shoulder and ID Taper
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
