The Harding VMC 600 II is a CNC vertical machining center. It comes fitted with a grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 8,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Hardinge VMC 600 II spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics to be broken down and fully evaluated. Upon inspection, we noted that the front bearings failed from coolant contamination and the grease was washed out of the bearings. We also always measure the drawbar pullforce, incoming and outgoing, and this spindle measured low at 1340 lbs (minimum is 1888 lbs). The taper was also noted to have some significant wear marks. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Hardinge VMC 600 II spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
- Replace Belleville washers
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the taper
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
