Matsuura ES450 Spindle Repair

The Matsuura ES450 is a CNC horizontal machining center. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and coupling driven spindle that is capable of running up to 15,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

When this Matsuura ES450 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics we noted that it spun very roughly and the bearings felt very worn when spun by hand. After a thorough breakdown and evaluation of the spindle, we noted that the rear roller was contaminated with a brown particulate. The front bearings were also contaminated with a brown particulate and #2 bearing was destroyed. We also noted that the housing had clumps of black material within it as well. Lastly, the grippers were very worn and needed to be replaced. No dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Matsuura ES450 spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
Replace bellevilles and grippers

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
