Matsuura ES450H2 Spindle Repair

This repair is a perfect example of the difference between an OEM repair and a Northland Tool & Electronics repair. We disassembled this spindle and found the front set of bearings had catastrophically failed. When we contacted our customer to discuss their failure and get a history of the machine they stated that they only run a specific part at low spindle speed and high removal rates. The spindle came from the factory set up for a high speed application so we converted the front bearing set to accommodate their process adding rigidity to the spindle and increasing its usable lifespan. We are able to cater our repairs to the specific needs of our customers unlike some OEM’s who rebuild the spindle to a generic version designed for a specific machine not a specific process.

Possible cause of failure:

  • Front bearing failure
  • Speed is being reduced to 12,000 rpm
  • Bearings are converted to a triplex set of bearings
  • This will increase the rigidity of the spindle

Repair action:

  • Clean, inspect overall dimensions
  • Replace bearings
  • Modify spindle for bearing conversion
  • Manufacture a new shaft labrynth spacer
  • Manufacture a new shaft labrynth tapered spacer
  • Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in
  • Final quality control inspection
