Our customers send us this type of Matsuura spindle in pairs. As it is a twin spindle machine we rebuild the spindles with that in mind. When we grind the tapers it may change the tooling orientation. To accommodate this we grind the shafts sequentially and match the critical dimensions. We also set the spacers for the installation so the installer does not have to go through that labor intensive process on site.
CHALLENGE
This Matsuura MC-500V spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics where we completed a full breakdown and evaluation. After fully disassembling the spindle we found that the front and rear bearings failed from coolant contamination. The shaft taper was worn and looks slightly bell mouthed with 6-8µ runout. We also noted the front journal had 16µ runout and will need to be addressed. Lastly, the rear shoulder of the drive pulley had slight damage. No other dimensional deviations were noted.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Matsuura MC-500V spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, bellevilles, gripper balls, and o-rings
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the BT35 taper and 70mm front journal
- True up pulley shoulders
- Adjust housing spacers
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
