The Matsuura HP405 is a CNC horizontal machining center. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and belt driven spindle that is capable of running up to 15,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Matsuura HP405 spindle is grease injection lubricated, which we have found over the years to be a very poor spindle design. Upon inspection, we noted that the grease injection port for #1 bearing was plugged in the spindle housing causing lack of lubrication to the front #1 bearing and over lubrication to the #2 bearing. The front bearing was overheated and ground up. Over heating and debris from the #1 bearing damaged/destroyed the front labyrinth system and spacer ring. Lastly, we noted that the Big Plus taper had some minor damage to be corrected. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Matsuura HP405 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Manufacture two front labyrinth rings
- Manufacture front shaft spacer
- Grind BIG PLUS face to OEM specifications
- Replace bearings with permanent grease type
- Replace o-rings and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
