Matsuura MAM700-HG Spindle Repair

The Matsuura MAM-700-HG is a high production CNC horizontal machining center. It comes fitted with an oil mist lubricated and coupling driven spindle that is capable of running up to 15,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Matsuura MAM-700-HG spindle arrived to Northland Tool and Electronics completely disassembled, except for the drawbar. Upon inspection, we noted that the tooling taper was damaged with 4-5µ runout and the face had 5-6µ runout. It was also noted, that the front housing had a damaged o-ring groove and the rear housing had a dent in the rear face/ID edge. When looking at the drawbar, we noted that the drawbar nut was full of balance holes and the gripper sleeve, balls, and fingers had excessive wear. Lastly, the #1 and #2 front oil injectors and one of the front coolant nozzles were sheared off. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Matsuura MAM-700-HG spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Kiss grind tooling taper and face
Repair front and rear housing damage
Replace bearings, drawbar nut, gripper sleeve, balls and fingers, front oil injectors, and coolant nozzle
Replace all oil supply lines and tubing wrap, push connect air fittings, o-rings, and assembly screws

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
