Mori Seiki NV5000 Spindle Rebulid

The Mori Seiki NV5000 is a CNC vertical machining center. It comes equipped with an oil mist lubricated and stator driven spindle that is capable of running up to 14,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Mori Seiki NV5000 spindle was sent in by our customer stating that the spindle was crashed and had excessive runout. The spindle spun freely and the bearings sounded good when it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics. Incoming run out tests of the taper came out good but, the taper has uneven contact. Upon breaking down the spindle and completing a full evaluation, we found that the #4 bearing was contaminated with a brown particulate. One of the coolant plunger assemblies had some light damage and should be replaced. Lastly, the customer did not supply the drawbar, which we will need for testing after addressing the taper damage.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mori Seiki NV5000 spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bolts, o-rings, bearings, and oil lines
Kiss grind the 40 ID taper

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
