Mori Seiki CL-20A Spindle Repair

The Mori Seiki CL-20A is a compact CNC turning center. This machine comes standard with a grease lubricated spindle that is capable of running up to 6,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Mori Seiki CL-20A spindle was sent to us because of a crash. Upon inspection we noted that the front bearings were slightly contaminated and the pulley compression ring was damaged. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, taper, housing, etc.) and found a lot of issues. First, the nose of shaft was bent, and had excessive run out. Second, the face had 40µ runout, the taper had 40µ runout, and the front shoulder had 22µ run out. Lastly, the front taper was 10µ egged and the thrust bearing journal had 7-8µ run out.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mori Seiki CL-20A spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings
Kiss grind the face, taper, front shoulder to straighten shaft
Replace pulley compression ring
Replace o-rings

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
